@[email protected] audiobookshelf is really good and one of the most important selfhosted platforms for me. I use it for both podcasts and audiobooks through my phone’s browser and avoid the need for a platform-specific app and proprietary subscription-based services.
For anyone looking for a good iOS front end for their Audiobookshelf instance, I can highly recommended Plappa (and off topic Paperparrot for paperless by the same dev). One off and affordable purchase, no subscription.
I love ABS, I use it for both podcasts and audiobooks.
i run ABS as a web based manager for drm free audiobooks but the player itself is just totally unreliable, i download the files and add them to BookPlayer on iOS
Are you using the web player or the iOS app? There is the official ABS app or Plappa as a third party app.
Hi @B0rax , @lealternative and I noticed that feddit.de has been unreachable since last night (server error). But how come I at Mastodon can read your message from this morning? Did you connect via the app?
feddit.de is in this error state since quite a while now (over a month). The web interface does not work anymore, but connecting through an app still works (I use voyager for example). Most people have migrated away from feddit.de to feddit.org. I will do the same at some point, I just didn’t have the time yet.
I can’t say I share that experience. By biggest problem with player is lake of chromecast on IOS and half balled chromecast on Android (lake of volume level, default 10% volum, doesn’t see my speaker pair, doesn’t always discover chromecast devices).
When I played around with ABS over a year ago, they said there were no plans to add auto-downloading of podcast episodes to your phone or auto-queueing of new episodes, so I dropped it and haven’t tried it since. Is this still the case?
The app is definitely not their focus, in particular podcasts where the app becomes very slow and crashy as you get hundreds of episodes per feed. Those features still are not present.
ABS does support RSS enough that you can hook a preferred podcast app up to your “local podcast mirror” and only use the ABS app for actual ebooks.
Thanks. I don’t generally listen to audio books, so what I’m really looking for is a self-hosted solution for podcast syncing that works better than gpodder while keeping feature parity with AntennaPod on my phone. It sucks that ABS is so close to that but decided to not go the last 10% of the way. I’m sure they have a good reason.
I’m looking forward to when Prologue v4 comes out and finally supports ABS. After that, I can finally move myself and my family to ABS and I’ll be one step closer to removing Plex.
This is what’s still keeping me on Plex. Waiting on that testflight.
I have not heard of Prologue and it support for Audiobookshelf (ABS).
Why would one choice Prologue over the ABS app?
The ABS app is also still in beta on iOS, so unless you are tech savvy enough to either sideload or try to get in on one of the windows when users are booted from the testflight beta, you are going to have to use one of the 3d party apps.
Prologue just seems to do many things nicely, and user experience seems very important to the developer, so there is a huge crowd that swears by the app.
There’s also Plappa for iOS on the App Store. Great alternative to the abs beta app.
I’ve been using Plappa while waiting for Prologue. Pretty solid app so far.
Very happy with Plappa. Highly recommend. One off purchase, no subscription.
Yeah, or Shelfplayer
I’m holding off on trying Plappa until they add session support, since I like the stats, heh.
Tho I do have a Testflight spot for the ABS app, as well.
I do want to try Plappa, though! I really like the paperless-ngx app (Paperparrot) from the same developer
What’s with all the 3rd party clients for ABS on iOS? Pretty cool, and unfortunately that there isn’t much going on on android.
ABS TestFlight is constantly full is one reason lol.
Additional reason along with what others have said: my mom has been massively consuming books on Prologue. It’s easier to keep her on a single app than to switch her to ABS or Plappa.
Prologue is an iOS app that can play audiobooks from a Plex library. I didn’t know they were working on ABS compatibility but that would be great. As much as I love ABS, Prologue is far more polished.
It’s been the Prologue developer’s next biggest priority on their roadmap. Apparently it’s coupled with the v4 Swift rewrite. I just saw it in the subreddit posted about 3 weeks ago.
