I finally got around to restarting God of War. I played the first few hours on PS4 a while back, and was overwhelmed, felt like it threw too much at me all at once, and I couldn’t be bothered to learn all the combat and mechanics. I got it for PC and started fresh, took it slow and used exploration to learn all I could, and shit, now I get it, this game is a masterpiece. It looks gorgeous in 4K, and the combat is loads of fun. And quite possibly my favorite thing is getting to hear Teal’c again (I freaking love Christopher Judge).

Now I just need to play something mindless to fill the next few weeks before Ragnarok releases on PC.

Last time I flew, I had a screaming baby in front of me, a screaming baby behind me, and a screaming baby next to me. I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t relax, and my noise-cancelling headphones did very little to help. Know what I didn’t do? Complain, berate the parents, or confine the babies to an unsafe and enclosed space.

Babies cry. There’s usually nothing they or their parents can do about it. That’s life. Flying sucks, and this is just a part of it.

I thought it was just me and my old iPhone, but I’ve also been having a lot of trouble connecting for the last few months. Since May, really.

My parents used to use AAA TripTiks to plan our trips. Granted this was decades ago in the olden days of paper maps, so I have no idea how good they still are, but apparently they still exist. Worth checking out.

I did a cross-country move about 8 years ago, and just planned each leg of the trip separately. I chose where I wanted to sleep, planned the route to get there, and then did the same for the next leg. There’s really no wrong way to do it as long as you connect the dots and go the way you want to.

I got a ton of play out of my PS4 at the height of the pandemic, and have been considering a PS5 for a while now, but I just didn’t think it was worth it. I’m probably in the minority, but I think I would probably buy this, if the spec bump was significant enough. I also really hope they release it in black. It’s silly, but the white 90’s router is so so ugly, and frankly one of the reasons I’ve stayed away. If they charge more than $600 though, it’ll be a hard no. Don’t fuck this up Sony.

Yeah I had a similar feeling about ground news. I had assumed the bot was at least created by someone who works there, using whatever algorithm that site uses to rate sources. The fact that’s it’s mentioned in every post really rubs me the wrong way, on top of how shitty the bot is at doing what it’s supposed to. And yet, it’s still around. What do we have to do to finally get rid of it?

Welp, they keep putting my federal loans into forbearance without asking, and they haven’t even calculated what my next payment will be because everything is held up in the courts, so I couldn’t make a payment even if I wanted to…

But don’t worry, the balance on my single private student loan is higher than the initial borrow amount after 20 years of on-time payments, so I’ll always have that hanging over me.

Wow, thank you for sharing all of this. Your experience does a way better job explaining her hatefulness than our silly article links. I wish this kind of comment got more visibility, because it really is a betrayal when an author who wrote fiction that was formative for entire generations of young adults around the world, turns out to hate her own readers, with a passion that is difficult to explain or understand.

No, that’s a totally fair question!

This article summarizes some of the transphobic shit she has said. Here’s another one. She likes to say that her beliefs are feminist and meant to protect women, but really what she does is denigrate trans women and meanly argues that they can never be “real” women. It’s bigoted, hateful, and not what most people would expect from a “lefty” author.

Seriously. She has been such a massive disappointment. The fact that she feels like she has to be actively hateful, makes it all the worse. Just shut the help up and enjoy your gobs and gobs of money.

I’m no dev, so I can’t speak to the codebase or mod tools, but I honestly don’t think it’s going to get much better than this right now. Lemmy has its issues for sure, but the community has been surprisingly stable, with little growth spurts here and there, and more healthy engagement than I expected. I get frustrated every so often, and there are accounts that make me want to scream, but that’s normal in any place where strangers interact.

I’m curious what other folks have to say, because if there’s a better alternative that I haven’t heard of, then I’m all in, but it’s been pretty hard to keep Lemmy as active as it is. It sounds like you might be a dev? If so, would you be willing to build the tools you want to see for the services you mentioned? It’d be awesome if folks with skills worked to improve existing open source stuff like Lemmy rather than building whole new ones that don’t have any active communities.
