I wish there was a way to test this without spending 50 bucks. My results have simply been that the resulting signal is just as unreliable as WiFi.

I have a bunch of useless phone jacks in several rooms of my house, and I’m wondering how much this would cost me. I took a look at the housing behind them and it doesn’t seem like anything I could convert myself, so it seems like a qualified electrician job…

I was gonna say, this level of theft is possible because of the number of people in the store that care if that store is stolen from.

At a Mom&Pop shop, there’s only one person behind the counter, but they have free time to ask how someone’s doing when they pick up something they intend to steal. Plus, any other customers in the place are relatively loyal, and not of the “stand around” variety. At a big chain store, there’s two employees doing the job of five that can barely even point someone to an aisle, and not a single customer cares if the CEO bleeds out in an alleyway.

I’d be okay with them forming this takeaway, but I think there were indications that the thieves were generally pretty well-off; it was often organized groups stealing and selling the goods by value rather than individuals in need of those specific things.

I think a lot of this would change if games didn’t have so much loading and setup. You get the opening logos, loading, then main menu, then continue at the checkpoint you were at, then recontextualize where you were, then finally get to some fun task. That can feel fatiguing to do all that setup.

A lot of this changes through console “sleep modes” that keep a game in memory for multiple days.

Never heard that about early builds, which makes me think it’s perhaps not verified.

I took it as the railroading matching up with Walker’s feelings of having only one choice. It doesn’t make sense to continue, but you feel forced to anyway - very much like him. What makes it more convincing, to me, is that there are hundreds of other action games that don’t give you a non-action, non-killing choice - and no one has those same criticisms of those games.

I respect Undertale, I guess I never felt much admiration for its peaceful methods because it’s such a direct translation of their combat mechanics, when making peace with people is rarely so simple.

But global warming seeks to fix that!

A friend of mine linked me to one called Straftat that seems fun. It’s built around small maps and 1v1 fights.

I agree that the mocking approach doesn’t work in terms of enacting change. I’m still in favor of it for our own sakes just because it’s fun.

One of the reasons I love Spec Ops: The Line. It’s marketed to the correct crowd. The exact type of person that needs to understand killing your way through a situation rarely works is the one who will see the cover and think “Aw cool, a shooting game about killing your way through an adventure”.

Sometimes I bitterly wonder if it was humanity’s acceptance of slavery that enabled those large constructions. Things like safe working conditions didn’t exist back then.

Off-humor, if anyone wants another “inspiring female character” that doesn’t achieve it with a mix of sexy/masculine-badass, watch Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Nausicaa is charming, thoughtful, kind to everyone, as well as her adventurous and brave personality being the only hope of stopping a pointless and deadly war.

It’s also Miyazaki’s first original film before making Studio Ghibli, and is willing to take on a slightly darker tone than most others.

For me it’s Of Countless Stars, the final dungeon theme of Endwalker.

Don’t forget MP and MP2. The first will arrest you for trying to take pictures of a military base, and the second was the highlight of Samus’ adventures.

To me, the biggest danger is people being “scared to talk about” a subject. This applies both to the comedian thinking of making a joke about X demographic, and also the member of X demographic unsure whether to voice how bad the joke made them feel.

Say the second guy condemns the comedian with an ultimate mic drop moment, so the comedian just shuts up and only talks the subject with an echo chamber of bigots who’ve had similar experiences.

Or, the second guy shuts up forever, and when the first guy runs for president on a platform of stopping the orphan crushing machine, the second guy thinks “Man, fuck that guy” and votes against him.

There’s definitely a much better median where they bring up the discontent in a gentle prompt - only escalating if they’re ignored. It takes two though, and the comedian would have to be okay with saying “Okay, I apologize.” That part is hard; with so much anonymous interaction now it feels rare for anyone to humbly admit fault.

So, the sad news is, most kinds of house spiders that you’d do this to won’t survive if you put them outside. If you want to keep them alive, put them somewhere out of sight.
