I remember being shocked at their articles for gay and trans people… and then you read the one on straight people and realize they believe in equal treatment.

Anyone who got a chuckle from this, it’s an excerpt from the Fur Trapper Saga, a series of fictional letters of advertisement for competing fur trapping businesses. Every one of the letters is hilarious, and they become more unhinged as PB Fouke and JF Swanton start really responding to each other’s claims. Highly recommend for anyone wanting some of that 2007-style forum humor.

For context, this paragraph is lifted from SomethingAwful’s Fur Trapper Saga, a series of fictional advertisements put out by two fictional fur trappers, who are competing in business.

While one of the trappers, PB Fouke, tries to sell his business on dedication, JF Swanton sells his furs on the promise that he is so cruel of course he’s going to have the best furs.

Doesn’t make it less offensive, but the point being that it was written in character as a fur trapper from the 1800s who regarded himself as much more cruel than all else.

Nope. There’s definitely too much anti-Latin American sentiment here, that’s part of why we’re in this mess. But I would say a good portion of people here aren’t racist toward Mexicans. But, a large part of that same portion just doesn’t have empathy for their situation because of a self-focused attitude.

Again, it feels like you’re preemptively judging US citizens. We’re the evil empire, there’s no denying that. But, no doubt, some of us will be the victims when it’s all said and done. Just as you are one of the victims of US aggression now, US aggression will eventually turn toward its own citizens. Now, this is me preemptively judging the situation, albeit with more real life experience of our citizenry, but I do think many here will put up a fight on their turf (mostly because of that self-focused attitude mentioned earlier).

That said, if the situation escalates into civil war, there will be plenty of innocents caught in the crossfire - and those are the potential refugees to which I’m referring. Nobody wants you to let MAGA jump ship after they unleashed the plague rats. God willing, that attitude will crumble as it makes DC crumble.

I don’t think you’re all the worst, I think that your best is rare and that most of you are not nearly as great as you think you are.

Well, you have the general US attitude nailed down at least.

But, I do think you’re preemptively judging the situation. Most people who helped perpetrate this will go down with the ship. They still think everything is fine. You’re kind of just displaying the attitude most US citizens have toward our southern neighbors - and look what kind of leader that got us.

At least Trump’s win was enough of a wake up call to the world that it weakened Poilievre a bit. For now.

Hopefully, in that case, more enlistees than refugees.

I don’t know if Trump will ever learn what consequences are. One month in office to this day, and he’s already made us an enemy to our neighbors and allies.

They have no real reason to show any kindness toward US Citizens, but I can only hope Canada takes refugees if the US domestic situation gets any worse.

Porn and weed.

I’ve no doubt there are people that can use it moderately, but my brain just keeps wanting more. I quit cigarettes with no issues. I went from drinking a 6-pack a night to barely drinking at all. But those two really are hard to escape. Every time I kick weed I always have a night where I’m relaxing and I go and get a preroll - then end up getting more and smoking for the next few days before I realize what I’m doing. Same thing with porn. I can smoke a hell of a lot of porn.

But seriously, it’s hard to quit. And I think that part of the reason is due to my inability to label either of those things as “real addictions” in my head. Neither of those things are demonstrably decreasing my quality of life, at least not the way cigarettes and alcohol did, so I’m having trouble contextualizing them as harmful. Porn is easier for me in that regard, since it definitely subconsciously affects my views on the human body, and noticing that more is helping me shake the habit.

For the record, I do think weed is a lot less harmful than booze. But there’s a right way and a wrong way to use it, and I’ve been using it the wrong way for so long that I don’t think I can use it the right way.

To quote one of the great philosophers of our times:

“Well, Stan, the truth is marijuana probably isn’t gonna make you kill people, and it most likely isn’t gonna fund terrorism, but, well son, pot makes you feel fine with being bored, and it’s when you’re bored that you should be learning some new skill or discovering some new science or being creative. If you smoke pot you may grow up to find out that you aren’t good at anything.”

Now, I don’t necessarily think all of that is true. Plenty of people are creative and innovative and also smoke pot, but it does make you content with doing nothing. Very relaxing in the moment, until you realize, after a few years of daily smoking, that all your friends have been learning new things and growing and you’ve been sitting on the couch watching TV the whole time. It’s totally fine to use every now and then, and by no means should be illegal, but we do need to start being realistic about how daily cannabis use quells that burning desire to be active and improve ourselves.
