  • I’ve been reading True Sex: The Lives of Trans Men at the Turn of the 20th Century. The pattern seems to be that the “tricked the woman into a relationship” thing would come up after the guy had been outed by police or something - throwing your husband under the bus to not be tarred by the association with queerness. Or a couple of cases where a jilted lover got revenge by revealing the “secret.”

  • As a transgender man who was chased out of my profession, subsequently experienced an intensifying period of relationship violence, was unable to find any form of support or help (no domestic violence shelters, no low income legal support, nothing), and experienced physical abuse on the female ward when this broke my brain so much that I told the nice person on the crisis line I wanted to die -

My life is political. I’m driving around with a license that might not count anymore, despite having followed all of the rules to get it changed 10 years ago. I don’t get to opt out of politics. I’d love to! I’d love to do nothing but focus on my career and hobbies, enjoy art and relationships.

But I can’t. The world I live in is actively hostile to people like me. Politics invades my life.

  • I don’t get Shorts. I can’t watch them on my PlayStation, if I click on one on the phone app it’ll disconnect the PlayStation and force me to watch it on my phone.

If you try to upload a video that is less than a minute long, it forces you to do Shorts.

I also don’t get why opening up a community thread or something pauses the video I’m watching on the PlayStation.

I’ve also noticed lately that when I connect the phone app with the PlayStation, about 30% of the time, the video will play extremely slow without sound. I have to close and reboot the YouTube app on the PlayStation to watch anything afterwards.

Exactly. The problem is that they will also start “cross multiplying” any time they see a fraction. “Okay, so what do I need to do if I want to add 3/4 + 1/3?” And then they’ll say “cross multiply”?

Just say - “hey, the way to get rid of the denominators is to multiply everything by the LCD.” Then it works in all cases. No weird “one trick” that doesn’t really teach them anything.

(But, where I live - the people teaching math don’t understand math lol.)

  • Few medical doctors have been as lauded—and loathed—as James Marion Sims.

Credited as the “father of modern gynecology,” Sims developed pioneering tools and surgical techniques related to women’s reproductive health. In 1876, he was named president of the American Medical Association, and in 1880, he became president of the American Gynecological Society, an organization he helped found. The 19th-century physician has been lionized with a half-dozen statues around the country.

But because Sims’ research was conducted on enslaved Black women without anesthesia, medical ethicists, historians and others say his use of enslaved Black bodies as medical test subjects falls into a long, ethically bereft history that includes the Tuskegee syphilis experiment and Henrietta Lacks. Critics say Sims cared more about the experiments than in providing therapeutic treatment, and that he caused untold suffering by operating under the racist notion that Black people did not feel pain.

    […]

In the 1850s, Sims moved to New York and opened the first-ever Woman’s Hospital, where he continued testing controversial medical treatments on his patients. When any of Sims’s patients died, the blame, according to him, lay squarely with “the sloth and ignorance of their mothers and the Black midwives who attended them.” He did not believe anything was wrong with his methods.

  • I mean, agreed, but at least having the public option would drive down some prices. Our health care system is a failure even by the standards of liberal capitalism.

Rolled my ankle a few weeks ago - probably fractured it, hobbled around and now I can walk on it without hurting. No medical care - I’m saving up $300 for my blood work for my routine check up and figured that even the Urgent Care would do nothing and charge me $100 for it.

The vast majority of people do not understand fractions. Even math teachers do not understand fractions. I quiver in horror every time a student says the words “cross multiply” because I am about to see some gruesome debasement of mathematics.

One of the funniest ways that these people get hacked is that you can give someone an NFT. Like it’ll show up in the wallet, no way to get rid of it. So you make a fake BoredApe or whatever other stupid JPEG, with a “smart contract” that essentially boils down to “steal everything” if the person ever interacts with it. Iirc some of the bigger name people have a bunch of these fake, toxic NFTs that they can’t interact with in any way, just hanging out in their wallet.
