There’s a little role playing game called “Call of Cathulu” that explicitly uses this as a story device. The human ape god was killed in a giant cosmic war thousands of years ago. This allowed some cats to get the idea that if they applied subtle psychic pressure to us, we would create civilization that would result in a comfortable life for cats. Human civilization is literally a feline conspiracy.
