I say this in the hopes Lemmy does not have them. Being too in favor of punching fascists should not result in a person being unable to participate in one of the largest forums on the internet. In fact, I’ll go out and say, any behavior that would normally be bigotry or authoritarianism is immediately justifiable if its against fascists. Yes, I am venting because my 9th account got shadowbanned for ban evasion, how can you tell? If a person gets banned, they’ll probably delete the account, When you then ban the new ones for evasion that is impossible to appeal, obvious fucking trap

Agreed and come to grips with the simple reality - if you keep doing the same thing over and over again why would you expect a different outcome. reddit has an overall theme and some keep bumping heads with that theme. Time to move on because YOU are not going to change it. Would you go to an Aquarium expecting to see a zebra?

    Nice shizopost.

Lets go at this one point at a time, shall we?

    1. lemmy as a whole does not have permabans or ip bans. Individual servers do. It is statistically unlikely you will be permabanned from lemmy.world let alone all of lemmy. Yet you can get banned by most communities over and over if you keep spitting nonsense that disagrees with their rules.
    2. bigotry and authoritarianism are never okay. It is scientific fact that fascists are wrong. No need for mental gymnastics. Diversity is healthy for any group, period.
    3. the fact that you have issues with running back into abusive relationships is sad and you may profit from therapy. Reddit is not your friend.

I wish you better experiences with the internet. Have a nice day.

They’re not looking for users that rock the boat

I just politely asked a mod to clarify a sub rule and got an unappealable sitewide ban for it

Reddit was dead long before this though, even before the 3rd party app ban. I just wasn’t willing g to accept it.

    Good riddance honestly

I’m really doubting this. Mods don’t have the ability to ban you sitewide, that’s only admins. And as an ex mod who was routinely harassed through modmail, they don’t often ban unless it’s death threat or continuous harassment levels of interaction.

For instance, we had one user who didn’t like being banned for their racist comments, so started being racist in modmail in response. It took four months of report/mute before they finally caught a ban.

As a former mod also, here’s what I found. There is a post or comment in your group. It doesn’t violate the rules of reddit. You are not calling for violence. You are not being a jerk to other posters. But what you post does not conform with the narrative that reddit pushes. So a troll that comes to your group goes crazy because there is someone with an opinion that conflicts with theirs. Oh the horror. They “report” the comment or post. An Admin who is probably a jerk since most of them are, is also pissed at “my god” someone with a “bad” opinion sees the report. And now they ban you site wide. So the mods of that group have zero say in it. The ironic part is the Admin clown needs to site a reason in their ban message to the user. And since you haven’t violated the rules they just lie. Their new favorite is “calling for violence”. In the world of reddit, if you have a contrary opinion you are calling for violence.

The way this should work is Admins who see a report should not site wide ban anyone. The Admins should message the GROUP mods and say remove this post or comment and then ban them from your group for 7 days, a month, etc.

        ¯\(ツ)

I was on reddit for over 10 years, the ban message I received wasn’t from the mod of the sub or even from the sub itself, it was from reddit admin claiming mod harassment

I was sitewide banned from reddit and never the sub

I was direct but polite, I didn’t understand why and my appeal and messages to reddit admin have gone unanswered

I’ve been banned lots of times before by overzealous mods and even sitewide banned with false reports from trolls but a simple appeal always sorted it out in less than 24 hours

Not this time, it’s been over a month and I’ve heard nothing. Time to move on

I’d love to even get a reply from support. I just got the same “reason” on all my accounts to check my other accounts for details on why - not one has it. Haven’t ever gotten a reply from support.

I could understand if there was some reasoning, or even something temporary with some reasoning. But that sucks so hard *that bots or admins can just decide “you don’t get to participate anymore despite your good standing,” arbitrarily and without recourse.

I mean, they can be abused, but they’re absolutely necessary to have.

And, if someone is trying to bypass a ban, they’re kinda not someone you can trust to behave in a reliably acceptable way at all.

Like, I get it, nobody likes being banned. But trying to pretend that you didn’t know that not only would you catch a ban for outright saying to punch a nazi just means you weren’t paying attention to reddit and how it’s been for years at this point. Yeah, punching nazis is fun and possibly useful, but trying to pretend you didn’t know that it will get you banned on reddit is like saying you didn’t know laying down in a urinal trough would get you covered in piss. That shit is not new. It was happening before the little asshole ceo started making things worse. There’s articles about it, people complain about it all the time.

And if you’re 9 accounts into trying to get around a ban, why the hell would anyone trust you to read and follow basic rules in the future? It doesn’t matter whether or not the initial ban was justified. Stupidly. Think about it. It’s like some stupid teenager being grounded and sneaking out the window. The very act of it proves you can’t be trusted.

Why the fuck would you even want to go back? Pick up the stealth app, read what you need to read, and let reddit go to hell.

I mean, vent away, but this is on you.

Reading isnt the point. I want to post and the fact of the matter is, every single thing I do is justified morally and by the initial ban being horseshit. Noone blames a teen gor sneaking out if their home is abusive

    Easy fix.

Get a new IP. If you are on mobile data, you can turn it off and back on for a new IP (if it doesn’t work, turn off your phone for 5 minutes, then turn it back on). Do not use “apps”, they will recognize that its the same device. Use Firefox and set it to a desktop useragent (or just share the data as hotspot, and browse from a computer). If you are using home internet, it might get a bit tricky. Some ISPs (like mine) will keep your modem on the same IP for a long time. Turn off the modem for 10 minutes, then turn back on, you might get a new IP, but if not (my ISP doesn’t give me a new IP), then leave it off overnight. Ig it still doesn’t work, you’ll have to ask your ISP to assign a new IP.

Also, remember to clear all reddit cookies before you make a new account. VPN servers will get recognized and they will either ban, or shadowban you. Use your real IP, one that’s clean and never been banned before.

Being too in favor of punching fascists should not result in a person being unable to participate in one of the largest forums on the internet.

Yea this is just gonna get you banned over and over. Perhaps consider leaving reddit? Or self-censoring and stop posting stuff they don’t like. You can’t have both. reddit does not like dissent, if you use reddit, you’ll have to bootlick spez to not get banned.

Never put your trust in a centralized social service again. In the old days when forums were independently hosted you might get banned but you can just go and find another one or host your own.

Everyone has gotten too used to the convenience of these centralized managed social media services like Reddit, TikTok, Facebook, etc.

Lemmy is great because it’s offers some of the convenience Reddit does but isn’t centralized. So if you get permabanned on one instance you can just find another that fits your interests better. Or host your own and you’re not reliant on a corporation that is trying to milk you and your data for all that it’s worth for a little profit.

I don’t use any centralized social media anymore. That shit is dead.

social media is only as good as its user base

I’m with you on this one. Honestly I’m starting to consider jumping through all of the hoops required to get going on Reddit again myself. I can make do with few entertainment related subs but I keep thinking about how there’s a reason that no major women’s spaces from Reddit have been able to ever take off here on Lemmy. And the fact that LGBTQ+ communities needed their own instance with downvotes disabled as a solution against vote brigading. It gives this place a pretty dark undercurrent despite all of its supposed left wing fervour.

And then there’s the smart ass sarcastic replies to everything, like you’re experiencing in this thread, that I see in almost every single thread. I’ve seen a new user come to this platform and ask if there’s a gen z community, only to get no answers to the question and a bunch of people going “wHo CAreS abOUT LabElS and GrOUps? Look at me, I’m such a free thinker!” Yesterday I saw someone posting that they wish there were more pop music and sports related communities, only for all the replies to be along the lines of “FuCK pOP muSIc, wHo waNTs to SEe that? Look at me, I’m such a free thinker!” And it’s fucking annoying, if I’m being honest.

I don’t want to feel this way because I love the idea of this platform. But I dunno, I’m missing being able to discuss certain feminist issues in communities where I’m not going to be called a sexist, have people comparing nazism to astrology to try and make a point that women bad too instead of addressing issues that need addressing, and have comments removed.

There’s good people here too. People that have been very cool and encouraging. And who make the effort to actually answer people’s questions about communities without just shitting on them. But to me, those people seem to be a few lights shining in the darkness that covers everything else. And it’s starting to affect my mood negatively.

Permabans are also a thing here. I kind of agree with you that there’s not really a need for them except maybe in very rare circumstances.

Each instance and community has its own moderation policy. Maybe there is one that does not do permabans but I have not heard any explicit discussion around this.

Okay, so the way I got around it was making a VM using virtual box and xubuntu, and using reddit through that. My current account is 10 months old and hasn’t gotten banned yet. Hope that helps!
