It’s fair game to blame citizens of fascist countries for the politics they helped to bring forward. And the “democrats and republicans are the same”-crowd that is very vocal on Lemmy definitely helped to enable this.
It’s a form of inaction and doomerism. “I voted the right way. My hands are clean… as we all march towards authoritarianism while nobody bothers to resist.” I don’t care how you voted. Get on the resistance train now or I guess see you in CECOT.
Serious question- what do you recommend as the best way to resist fascism?
The best way to resist fascism is the way that YOU will actually do. So if, for you, it’s calling your congresspeople from the comfort of your home, do that. If it’s going to protests, do that. If you’d rather be the hero escorting migrants from their court hearings, do that. If you’re the type of person who gets a kick out of making a giant ruckus outside the hotels where ICE agents are staying so they can’t sleep and ultimately get evicted, do that. And if your preferred means of resistance is, let’s be honest, a little more naughty, do that.
The best way to do any of the above, IMO, is to get involved with a local resistance or advocacy organization. (Here’s one place you can start.) Strength in numbers and everything.
My point though is that this is an all-hands-on-deck moment. It’s not the time for infighting or purity testing or hand wringing. It’s the time to fight.

The reminder doesn’t actually accomplish anything, though, given the gravity of the fascism we’re facing. If this were a standard election cycle, sure, whatever, blame away. But we’re not in a standard election cycle and we may never be again at this rate. So instead of pointing fingers, it’s a lot more useful for the left to unite against the fascists and try to resist their relentless encroachment.
And I’m reminding people what happens when they don’t unite and vote, and instead do this “n n not good enough!” stuff.

It’s more complicated than it should be, only Congress can declare we are at war, however over the past 200 years they have passed laws allowing the president to do things before that vote out of a sense of being flexible and Congress being slow , and keep allowing more and more things, I think currently the president can do almost anything with the military so long as Congress leaders are told and they then can vote to stop it, instead of voting to approve it.
The constitution gives Congress the exclusive power to formally declare war.
That said, Congress hasn’t declared war since 1942, yet we’ve obviously taken part in many wars since then.
Sadly there just hasn’t been enough Congressional support to retaliate against a president for jumping to military action without authorization. And it doesn’t help that the average American doesn’t know that the president is not allowed to just deploy troops at will (in most cases, Iran included).
If the president can do it without consequences, then he is allowed. Turns out words on paper mean nothing.

Trump killed off the JCPOA in 2018. Biden had four years after 2020 to do something about that and didn’t. So I don’t know what you’re basing your assertion on, it sounds more like wishful thinking to me.

Iran does have a nuclear power plant and they do enrich their own uranium. Not trying to justify these bombings, I’m just curious on how they determined these sites are specifically for weapon manufacturing.
