I’ll take both
Why are we getting weird and territorial about cheese and pasta?
Because if we don’t separate everything by race, how can we hate each other effectively? We must attempt to make people feel bad or excluded for our differences!
White people then: eradicate african cultures White people now: stop exluding us from african American culture you racists!
YEAH! Fuck me because of something my great great grandpa may have done that I have never once done nor wanted to do. I’m obviously a bad person because of my skin color, you see.
We really playing the “if some of the people your color did something bad 200 years ago all of the people your color are bad now” game? Because quite frankly I know some pretty shitty people who feel the same way you do that would love to take this opportunity to remind you that the FBI says that while african americans only make up 12% of the population they are responsible for 50% of the crime, and they feel very similarly to you that this means the entirety of black people are criminals.
OR we could realize both you and those racists are objectively some of the stupidest people in the fucking world and should shut right the fuck up with their racism and your prejudice.
And now I’m going to exit lemmy for a few hours and go eat more ethnic food with my ethnic friends and have a good time while you wallow in hatred both self- and prejudicial, and there’s not one fucking thing you can do to stop us.
Everyone who is alive today is descended from slave owners, thieves, rapists, murderers, conquerors and oppressors. They are also all descended from people who were the victims of slavery, theft, rape, murder, conquest and oppression. If people are responsible for the actions of their ancestors, then we are all guilty of damn near everything, and it’s basically just original sin without all the Catholicism.
Do y’all have the reading compression of a fruit fly or is it an instinct to play the victim role every time the word white is mentioned? No where did I ascribe intergenerational blame.
I was responding to someone else’s post which was discussing intergenerational blame. I’m sorry if this made you feel like you weren’t the center of attention for 2 seconds. But I’m sure if you keep being an asshole to random strangers on the internet you’ll eventually fill that void.
Good to know you can so easily trigger a color blind yt. Never said I hate you because of what your grandpa did. I just find it dumb how offended people get if a marginalized group isn’t ready yet to fully integrate after generations of trauma. What I said was a jab at a systemic phenomenon, not a behavior of any one individual. But good to know what a ethical grass toucher you are, very relevant.
Yeah yeah, “I was only being prejudice for the lolz I’m really the nicest ever”
Heard that before. You my Uncle Steve? Thing is, he’s lying to himself too.
Maybe go to therapy instead of projecting your family trauma
You think it’s “traumatic” having a racist uncle who I’m using to make fun of you for being prejudice? Lol I just think he’s as stupid as you, doesn’t affect me much really, you must be the biggest pussy in the world who’s never had any real problems if you think that’s traumatic.
Because it’s Lemmy
Forget it Jake, it’s
ChinatownLemmyJust got around to watching this movie for the first time, real happy ending.
Yeah man, both at fine. I’ve had some great 4-cheese homemade mac’n cheese that doesn’t turn out too dry, but that seems to be the rarity.
How else can we keep racism thriving?
Yeah why are white people in this thread so goddamn triggered over what they claim to love?
I’ve never met a white woman who wouldnt say the stuff on the right is the best she’s ever had but had never had the the stuff on the left.
President’s Day
I maintain that Mac and Cheese is one of those foods that weirdly gets better the worse and more fake it is.
Ive had some gourmet shit and I always think “I miss the old Kraft one with the tinned cheese.”
Sounds like Stockholm Syndrome.
I enjoy White Castle every once in a while. I tried their new 1929 or whatever its called burger. Its actually a pretty good burger but I decided that when I go to White Castle, I just want a standard slider with cheese with ketchup and onions.
Cause you’re tasting that sweet, sweet nostalgia.
I’d bet if you gave someone that’s never had Mac and cheese before Kraft Mac vs a good gourmet Mac, the gourmet will win by an absolute landslide.
Cheap Mac and cheese isn’t good because it’s good… It’s good because of the old memories attached to it.
Nah, thats not it.
The gourmet stuff just seems to be missing the whole point for me, not saying its bad Ive had some that were really good but they just seem to be missing the point. Its never going to be good for me nutritionally speaking, its not going to be served at a michellin star restaraunt. It’s Macaroni and Cheese. It’s like corn chips, I’m not saying that the gourmet Deli ones are bad, but they arent Doritos. That orange powder is delicious because it’s fake and engineered. I wouldnt make Nachos with Doritos but if your after that “Cheez” its whats right.
Hard disagree. Gourmet mac just tastes like noodles and bland cheese gravy.
Bro, that’s not good Mac and cheese. You haven’t had good Mac and cheese. I promise you.
Check out how to use sodium citrate and what it does.
Them get yourself some of your favorite cheese.
For me, smoked Gouda and cave aged cheddar and a little pecorino romano if I’ve got it.
Roughly 4-5g of sodium citrate per 100g of cheese. Use water or milk, start with a half cup and add more as you need it, honestly there’s more than enough fat content in the cheese that it won’t make a difference. Shred cheese and add to simmering water. Keep adding cheese until everything is in the pot, and the sauce is perfectly smooth. There should be no lumps. Add more water or milk to desired consistency, and add some mustard powder, cayenne, and garlic. And salt to your preference. It’s the creamiest Mac and cheese you’ll ever have, and the depth of flavor is game changing. I promise you.
You can even take it to the next step with caramelized onions or shallots and some crumbled sausage. Finish with some bread crumbs, a little paramesian, and some smoked paprika on top, and toss it under the broiler for a minute to toast up.
For reference, the photo of the “Juneteenth” version is melted cheese with noodles. Fuck that. The recipe I gave you will look like the stuff on the right, and its so fucking good, you’ll discover God in that bowl of Mac and cheese.
Well, that does sound better than the horseshit I’ve been served in the past.
Counterpoint:
Trash macs and cheese are really good, and there are some amazing high-effort recipes.
It’s all the stuff in the middle that forms an uncanny valley that isn’t any good.
I do love the hot Chetto flavored Mac and cheese
I’ve had a box in my cabinet for a couple weeks, gonna make it now thanks to you.
Bottom one is Wilford Brimley and Dr. Robotnix’s son.
Good meme! (I have no clue what any of it means other than the dates)
Juneteenth celebrates the abolishment of slavery, I’d say people of colour are the most happy about that, and people of colour are stereotypically famous for making good food
4th of July celebrates the US independence, which though not a predominantly a white holiday more white people (on account of being a racial majority) will celebrate it, and white people are stereotypically famous for making bland food
Idk man French food is pretty good
C’est vrai.
French people are only white in the US
This seems pretty dumb… I don’t typically attribute amazing Mac and cheese to minorities.
Like… Most other foods, sure. But this one? Come now…
The meme is specifically referring to the quality of food at black cookouts versus white cookouts. If you’ve been to both, you know.
Maybe the white people you hang out with are shitty cooks. It’s amazing how folks will continue stereotypes that don’t even make sense.
I’m sure there’s plenty of people of colour who suck at cooking. Those are just stereotypes used for an Internet joke
I know I’m into this meme way too deep here, but I think content like this is just rather divisive in a very subtle but damaging way. The comment I actually replied to goes to that next actual step saying the joke is truthful. Not the end of the world but I don’t think calling it out is inappropriate.
You’d last 5 seconds at a black standup comedy show. Too much flavour.
Sorry the meme hurt your feelings.
Naw. Mfers up at the break of dawn to start the fire don’t care about that. That’s just some eagerness to support racial stereotypes. All kinds of folks can throw down. If you’ve been to any of them, you know.
It’s okay for black people to be good at something. It doesn’t have to threaten you.
I said everyone is capable of good game. No need for the royal stretch there.
I have been to both, and the stereotypes are wrong. Cooking skill is not inherent to race or culture, it’s within the individual at the stove.
Wouldn’t white cookouts be steak and burgers and that sorta stuff
They’re all kinds of things, and this whole concept is some divisive nonsense. People out here going to bat for racial stereotypes.
and people of colour are stereotypically famous for making good food
Can’t say I’m familiar with that stereotype as it relates to black Americans. Immigrant minorities, sure.
The stereotype of white people making bland food is pretty common in the black community. And adding raisins to potato salad.
I have never heard of raisins in a potato salad and that sounds terrible.
Who is adding raisins to potato salad? I’m so white that my mom raisin pies for dessert and have never witnessed this travesty.
I don’t think the meme itself is making that particular distinction, moreso just the difference in cuisine in general as a racial stereotype.
people of colour are stereotypically famous for making good food
The stereotype I always saw was just KFC, watermelon and some purple drink. Maybe it was a bit more aggressive stereotype than what you had in mind
You aren’t invited to the cookout
I’ll just order it to-go
Also collared greens.
White => English
All whole people from anywhere else is proud of their food
as both Juneteenth and the 4th of July are American holidays, I referred to American stereotypes about Americans
Independence day == shitty
Junteenth == based
It’s dumb.
I assumed it was: “typical black family Mac and cheese” (baked, delicious)
“typical average American Mac and cheese” (not baked, more saucy, delicious)
Juneteenth does not celebrate the abolishment of slavery. It celebrates the news arriving in Houston. New Jersey had slavery six months after juneteenth. Also it only freed men.
I have never seen anything that says the Emancipation Proclamation or the 13th Amendment only freed men. Do you have a source for that?
Did women have the right to vote, to open a bank account, to live without a man controlling them?
Was it legal to own a slave who was a woman? Did women legally have the same rights as other women, regardless of skin color?
Clearly there weren’t equal rights, just as clearly as the end of slavery didn’t mean the end of racism, but this event is significant enough to stand on its own
Mac and cheese casserole is almost always inferior to the cheese sauce variety. The best versions meet in the middle, but I absolutely hate that eggy cheese quiche shit.
Macaroni amd cheese is nothing but kmart Carbonara.
If my grandmother had wheels she would have been a bike
If wishes were horses, then you’d be able to use a metaphor properly.
Not every joke is a homerun, but if you don’t roll the dice, you’ll never get a bullseye
4th of July is only better for me because I don’t get Juneteenth off even though I work in a school. Fucked it is!
This year was the first year I worked in an office that didn’t recognize Juneteenth. Someone still found a way to complain about people expecting Juneteenth off work and blamed Zoomers for it becoming the norm like it’s a bad thing
Gosh dang zoomers expecting nationally recognized holidays off, like this is the 20th century or something. Next they’re going to expect clean water, and acceptable working conditions.
My current company is the first one that does recognize Juneteenth as a holiday, so I assume I have a much longer work history than you.
I’m still not used to it existing so it totally slipped my mind and I would have accidentally come in to work, except one of the overseas guys pointed it out
I’ve been working for 20+ years and I’d never heard of it until a couple years ago. I don’t have a problem with it, celebrating stuff is cool, but it does seem to have come out of nowhere when it became a political issue. Maybe it was a regional thing before that.
It became a federal holiday in 2021
Yeah that was when I first heard of it. I researched it at the time and saw that it has been around for a long time but I had never heard of it before that and I’d consider myself to be pretty well read on history in general. Obviously enough people were aware of it to push for a holiday so maybe it’s just the part of the country I’m from it wasn’t celebrated much idk.
Neither of my last two jobs have recognized MLK or President’s Day as holidays.
Same, I don’t understand how schools can weasel their way out of federal holidays so easily lol.
Shouldn’t you be out for summer break by now?
My kids finished today. A couple towns over finished last week. I don’t know how they decide this shit.
Do you live somewhere snowy? We used to have to stay extra days of we got too many snow days
Just in time for the days to start getting shorter.
Why are we comparing two unrelated holidays like this
You realize that you’re talking about southern food right? As in not exclusively black?
This. OP probably has an antifa flag and speaks on behalf of Black America.
And he’s anglo as anglo can be.
Southern food is great because Southern white people have a different set of culinary influences than northern white people. I don’t know what that influence might be, but it must’ve been huge.
French, Scottish, native American, and west African.
My wife is white southern and is passionate about black culture Mac n cheese
Does she have a cast iron skillet that she only uses for corn bread?
Man there’s Canadians that have that.
Truth, I’m Scottish and have that. But… The cornbread made in it is always savoury. Never sweet.
This is true for US southerners. Man they HATE sweet cornbread.
Really varies on where you go and who you talk to. It’s not a universal thing.
That’s weird… Living in the South for half of my life, every place, including grocery stores, sells some deliciously sweet ass corn bread. But in California, Washington, Oregon, even Michigan? Nope… it’s just slightly sweet and a different texture.
That’s because it’s trash.
There really is something to that, the non stick surface you can get if you never introduce acid or meat. Used mayonnaise to season a dutch oven and fry pan over time after seeing what mayonnaise slathered bread used to make grilled cheese sandwiches did over time to a flat top. The dutch ovens for rye bread, skillet for corn.
Liar liar pants on fire. This is not a, “black culture mac n cheese”. This is straight up southern style mac n’ cheese.
Uh… wut? I’m from the west coast but since I’m military and met my wife on the south
Where do you think the southern slave owners got their culinary influences from?
In this case, regarding macaroni and cheese? Never know, could’ve been africa, I suppose. Much more likely it could have been Its origins trace back to cheese and pasta casseroles dating to the 14th century in Italy and medieval England. The traditional macaroni and cheese is a casserole baked in the oven; however, it may be prepared in a sauce pan on top of the stove or using a packaged mix.[4]
Apt user name 😂
I fisted your dad.
I don’t think the point of the meme is that Mac n cheese belongs to black people. It’s that GOOD Mac n cheese belongs to black people. Maybe you didn’t notice, but the Mac n cheese on the left looks how it should while the one on the right looks like watery stoffers. If you didn’t notice, I’d say the meme is pretty accurate.
Fuck off with this racist horseshit.
It’s a meme
Facts don’t care about your feelings.
No. They don’t.
So “homemade” vs “frozen?” Homemade mac and cheese is a black thing, and white people didn’t eat it before freezers were invented? TIL.
Memes aren’t meant to be history lessons.
I get that, but the Mac n cheese on the left is made by people in the south, not just black people. In fact a lot of things labeled as “black” are actually just southern. Its just the south has better food than the north. White people are eating it too.
Edit: as a European who likes spicy food, anything you’re likely to get north of the Mason Dixon line is basically inedible slopp. Go eat a bowl of seafood gumbo and tell me I’m wrong. Go on, I’ll wait. And while you’re down there, bring me some southern maid donuts.
Gumbo, if you know how to cook it, is the same basic thing as split pea and ham soup, if you’re doing that right. It’s a classic “same thing but local ingredients” deal, French cooking by way of the Acadians down to Louisiana.
A lot of southern things were co-opted from blacks. It’s called soul food for a reason.
Pasta is not one of those things.
All you’re doing is comparing southern style mac n cheese vs basic everyday fast mac n cheese. It’s not even a race thing…
Yeah I don’t understand what the point of this post is. Maybe they just like Juneteenth better as a holiday?
I cannot speak to macaroni pie directly, but you’d be surprised by how many things considered Southern are straight out of Africa for reasons that should be obvious.
Pretty much every culture that has some form of cheese and processed grain has mixed them together and bake it apparently lol. I wanna try and make pastitsio now
That may be true, but I’m only talking about Southern style mac n’ cheese.
I like flaming Hot Cheetos pasta
Oh baby
-
Is that a real thing or a joke I’m too European to get?
-
Where can I get this if it’s real?
-
Where can I just get Flamin’ Hot Cheetos? Because they don’t sell the damn thing in my country :(
Yours sincerely,
flaming anus enjoyer
It’s real, and it’s glorious.
-
The Hague would like to know your location.
Jesus christ kill this one with fire
Is this the origin story for Flamin’ Hot Mac and Cheese?
Mmmm, cheese leather…
What if cheese, but it was brittle and sharp?
In my mouf pls
Aaaaaaaah
Umm, yummy tbh, but that sounds a few steps beyond leathery. I don’t usually associate “brittle” and “sharp” with “leather”. “Chewy” totally. “Tough”, maybe.
I love this.
I don’t get Juneteenth but I didn’t have to, it doesn’t affect me. Although personally I think the name is weird - it’s definitely grammatically incorrect. But whatever, y’all have fun. I like Mac’n’cheese though.
It’s a celebration of freedom? What’s there to get?
It’s just the “Nine” in nineteenth (a word that only has long vowels) replaced with June. June 19th turned into a single word. It specifically celebrates the day slavery was abolished in Texas.
deleted by creator
That is a good point. I guess they should deal with the holiday like Halloween or Christmas, celebrate it when everyone else does.
My only gripe is I can never remember the number, and there are several teenths. I’m bad with dates. July 4th is idiot proof.
Yeah, One of the vendors I work with emailed me to let me know they’d be off that day and I had to look it up. It would have been the same if it was called abolition day or something like that but there’s something a little annoying about the fact that they made it halfway with putting the date in the name.
Damn Juneteenf sucks
Both of those look disgusting. And I like Mac n Cheese.
Cheesy Mac ( the microwave shit) is not Mac n cheese
Mac and cheese is all macaroni cheese pasta.
I don’t think I’ve ever eaten microwaved Mac and cheese, don’t wish to try. If that’s what those photos are, then obviously disgusting.
