Warning: Elon Musk now has Huffman bending the knee. Whitepeopletwitter, iselondeadyet and loads of other Elon critical subs have been banned or suspended.
Just a warning, Reddit is no longer a safe place for free speech, it is compromised.
A reddit thread about this is what actually led me here. Reddit has been on my shit list for a while, it’s cool this place exists.
Non-corporate owned media is going to be the only way to escape the continued enshittification of the internet.
Welcome! Bring your content, enjoy the friendly people :)
And form a positive opinion on Linux man. Just any opinion. They’ll slaughter you without one it’s rough out there
I love my Steam Deck.
And if you don’t have an opinion on linux just reply with “I use arch btw”
Linux bad
We should be going back on there and proselytizing (and on this end, welcoming new users with h links to documentation etc.) btw if you’re new I recommend checking out the various mobile clients. I personally use lemmy sync because of muscle memory from years of using it on reddit, but there’s a number of open source ones too.
I agree. I do worry about the barrier to entry for some people. I know it gets brought up a lot here but I think it’s a valid criticism.
Looking into apps was actually the first thing I did after making an account!
I used Sync for a few minutes, but then settled on Voyager because they don’t collect any data.
Voyager is very nice btw.
Huffman isn’t bending the knee. He’s been deep throating Musk for quite a while. Even before the whole API thing, it was known the he saw Musk as a great role model.
Yeah, Reddit hasn’t been safe in a long time. If people are only just now realizing that, it’s because they’ve been extremely sheltered from… Well… Gestures vaguely at everything
You are correct. I didn’t realize how shit it was until I focused on being more security minded. I ditched almost all centralized social media. I’m working to get rid of Facebook and hopefully google next. That’s going to be hard .
Just a warning, Reddit is no longer a safe place for free speech, it is compromised
Woah, looks like a post from a few years ago must have gotten stuck behind a file cabinet!
Initially they banned chapotraphouse for no reason then when latestagecapitalism got taken over by conservatives it was officially dead for me.
they cover it up well, you don’t notice from within their ecosystem
Could there be a better example of why not to remain on Reddit?
The United States of America has become comfortable with bending the knee to petulant man-children. What an utterly pathetic time to be an American. Truly embarrassing.
I hope that a new breed of American can rise from this inferno, who exemplifies what it means to be good people. Whether some of us will be standing proud a decade from now…who knows?
Most have come back, /drugs for example. The admins said its a glitch, I can’t beleive that and glad I’m here. I have no doubt reddit will get on its knees in the name of $$$$$$.
I missed reddit simply because I can’t find the fucking porn on Lemmy (though I realize now that it might be because I"m on lemm.ee)
No I have no reason to miss it
You may need to check the “show NSFW” button in your settings.
I do, but it never shows up on my feed
Some Lemmy instances block lemmynsfw, so you won’t see it.
This is a little too vanilla and 3D for my taste, but thank you
What I really want are the transformation and expansion stuff
there’s some good 2d stuff on that instance too
At least there plenty of Blahaj Hentai on Lemmy.
And I just went back to Reddit after the election. Lemmy is full of the most annoying social warrior edgelords where every fucking thread devolves into fighting from insane viewpoints. The “never genocide” “both sides” kind of people.
It’s fucking exhausting.
But guess Reddit is imploding again. Hopefully we get more normal people to migrate this time to help drown out the nutters.
Been on Lemmy since the election. Having a way better time than on Reddit. Especially since I didn’t have to jump through hoops on Lemmy to get dark mode and the Old Reddit look. Just a better site. Only thing it needs is more content, but there’s enough to keep me happy.
Guess everyone has their own experience with it.
Im in the exact same page as you. Seeing a mod remove comments because people weren’t capitalizing another users pronouns was the straw that broke my back the first time I yeeted Lemmy, the next time I came back to lemmy there was a whole thing about u/vegan banning people for saying that feeding a vegan diet to a carnivore pet was animal abuse. I’d LIKE lemmy to be usable if you dont have a tolerance for extremism, but I’m not holding my breath
The extremists would be the first to leave Reddit and search for alternatives. Eventually, enough average people join that it levels out. But if you try to do that artificially, it’ll just water the space down until it becomes another reddit.
Tbh, my only issue with reddit is who owns it and the way in which they exploit that. As a product I’m pretty happy with it, and the thing that made it reduce in quality, losing a shitload of its moderators because reddit fucked them over, ISNT an area that Lemmy beats it in. When I started getting my foot out the door I started paying attention to how many mods an instance had when I blocked it, and the majority of Lemmy instances had like ONE active mod. Lemmy is effectively unmoderated, and I’m not a fan of that, especially with some of the population it has.
I’m not trying to be rude, but it sounds like a mainstream echo chamber is exactly what you’re looking for. There’s instances like that. I don’t know what’s so terrifying that instances can exist outside of that.
Nah man, I just dont want idiotic and extreme takes to be like 30% of what I see. Someone who champions lgbtq rights while defending Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, or a Vegan who nutritionally starves their pet because they think their ideals trump their cat’s nutritional needs, or even a self identified Narcissist who thinks the word Narcissist is an Ablist slur are NOT opinions worth reading, but thats exactly the kind of bulshit thats uncommon at its very rarest on this site. Further, moderation keeps threads on point, and doesnt drag EVERY instance into whatever bulshit drama that is hitting lemmy this week
Yeah I feel you. I just want the old internet back. We had MySpace, StumbleUpon was a fun waste of time, and we could easily ignore politics. Now everything is political, everyone is an internet activist yet no one does what needs to be done IRL.
Eventually, someone will Luigi Elon. Absolutely no one will care.
Hey now… for about 10 minutes a bunch of people with names like Groyper1488, IdFuckMyTeslaIfItHadATailpipe and BitcoinKing will be very upset.
They won’t care that he has been luigied, they will care about their shytocurrency.
Hence why the period of mourning would only be 10 minutes.
I’d care! I’d throw a massive fucking party.
This is why fediverse UI and intuitiveness being as good as possible, rather than “open sourcey”, is so important.
Everything helps. Those of you who are working on the Fediverse, thank you!
Where can I learn more about fediverse?

what was that song again the slave owners sang? ‘land o’the freeeee’ or sth… it gets funnier the more history they produce.
Good. That will only sped up Reddit pulling a bluesky on their asses.
All they need to do is find a distributed alternative that won’t bend the knee to any one entity.Huffman? The guy involved in lossless compression?
Reddit is no longer a safe place for free speech, it is compromised.
I think that happened a long time ago
The simple fact that there is an unnecessary amount of control given to a single person over the information and communication you share and consume automatically makes the environment this person controls an unsafe environment for free speech. Yes, there should be moderation, but it should by moderation by the community, not the person on the top of the unnecessary hierarchy. Centralized social media only serves its owners, it exists for no other reason.
i was gonna ask if op was new to the internet.
like, what does he think we’re all doing here in the first place
Was it really ever a safe place for free speech?
Back before they went “independent,” kind of. When Sears sent legal threats to take down a post exploiting an xss bug to make a joke about grilling babies, reddit had a big public discussion on it, and ultimately left the post up
Reddit is no longer a safe place for free speech, it is compromised.
That ship sailed years ago.
Lol… it never was
I joined reddit in 2012, back then it was really a free place, It hasn’t been for a while but back then it was.
Yeah… was the whole Ellen pao thing 10 years ago? There’s been dreams every time a sub is banned for ages.
I don’t blame them for backing the jailbait sub, that was creepy as fuck.
Or coontown.
I forgot about that. Good riddance.
Removed by mod
Looks like a bunch of incels being pathetic together. If that’s where you’re finding your masculinity you should probably rethink your entire life from the ground up because you took a wrong turn somewhere.
Reddit is no longer a safe place for free speech
Friendly reminder of when spez, many years ago, literally just changed a user’s comment, and then went on to not be immediately fired over this insane breach of everything to do with customer relations.
Was that while he was a moderator of /r/jailbait?
Spez is a piece of shit, but wasn’t that a joke? Like other mods added him as a mod?
At the time you could add someone as a mod without their say so. and apparantly thats what happened with Spez.
Doesn’t change the fact that he didn’t instantly remove himself but left it there for years.
Oh damn I didn’t realize he was a mod for years. I figured it was like a day or something.
Excellent point. I’m sure the guy who edited user comments couldn’t have un-modded himself at any given point.
Wouldn’t that mean that he was likely sent CSAM - and possibly didn’t report it?
That would indicate that there would be no plausible deniability about the trading rings being run by the mods and users.
Reddit would not have removed r/jailbait if it hadn’t made CNN. R/picsofdeadkids was up for long after that.
R/picsofdeadkids was up for long after that.
Not for much longer. Gawker doxxed Violentacrez shortly after, and I believe he shut down all his subs when that happened.
Violentacrez
You mean Michael Brutsch.
You can only be on a mod team if you are invited and you accept.
That was not always the case, and was only set up that way after the CNN expose. Fuck Spez left, right, and up the middle, but he only was only listed as a mod on /r/jailbait at a time when you could freely add anybody as a mod to your subreddit.
TIL. Thank you.
